Device management: A core capability of an IoT platform

IoT is about two things, managing applications driven by the data coming from “things” and managing the “things” themselves. According to PAC’s definition, a platform should address both areas to be called an “IoT platform”.

However, when I look at the IoT market, I get the impression that people talk much more about IoT application management, including all the related capabilities around data & analytics, than about IoT device management.

It’s time for a clear statement in this context: Device management is not just “nice to have”, it is a core capability of an IoT platform. This is particularly relevant as we see clear differences as to the depth of the capabilities of IoT platforms around device management in today’s market. One very positive exception in this space is the Bosch IoT Suite by Bosch Software Innovations, which offers a broad set of functions in this space – which is why PAC rated them as “best in class”:

IoT platform with many fields of application

These functions allow device managers to provision and deprovision, monitor and update IoT devices both individually and on large scale. Updating software and firmware on IoT devices, which ensures device security, bug fixing and the enablement of new features, is mission-critical for many different industries. Therefore, the device management capabilities of the Bosch IoT Suite are not limited to a single industry . Bosch can provide strong proof points from various client projects. This demonstrates that they can serve the heterogeneous device management needs of various use cases. For example: connected cars, connected machines, smart logistics, and all kinds of smart devices in buildings and homes.
