Introduction

There are many different home automation systems available on the market. Here at i-Lifestyle we have chosen the most common system in use in europe today the EIB/KNX installation bus.

In order to transmit and exchange information it is impractical to have a separate instalation network for each type of function required (heating, lighting, alarm system, etc) but more often than not that is what happens. The use of installation bus technology allows these separate and disparate systems to be unified into a single and common control "highway" that runs round your home.

The term "BUS" is used to describe this highway. Communications buses have been used in factories and industrial processes for many years, EIB is used as an industrial comms protocol as well as for residential systems.

The beauty of the EIB/KNX installation bus is that it is not tied to any one manufacturer (see below). It does not require any centralised controller or any specialist software. It is open ended and is suitable for the following applications and a lot more.

  • Lighting
  • Security
  • Heating
  • Power Control
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Home Sensors
  • Appliance Control
  • Garden Irrigation
  • Central Locking
  • Remote Internet Control
  • Mobile Phone Control

KNX, EIB - Now I really am confused!

KNX = the Konnex Bus Standard and EIB = European Installation Bus Standard. These standards have been laid out by european electrical industry associations for home and building electronic systems. The EIB by the EIB Association (EIBA),and the KNX Bus by the Konnex Bus association. These associations include in their founding membership some of the most prestigious brand names in european electrical engineering, like ABB, Siemens, Bosch, Berker, AEG, GEC and BICC.

These standards are currently undergoing convergence into a single unified home and building electronic systems standard, this is KNX. All you really have to be aware of is that any structured home automation system you install adheres to one or other of these two bus standards, eventually the EIB standard will become obsolete as the KNX but don't worry EIB equipment is compatible with the KNX bus as the EIB bus protocol makes up the backbone of KNX.

At i-Lifestyle we ONLY supply EIB/KNX equipment
